Irrespective of the bioclimate, they are composed of individuals in morphogenetic development accompanied by some mature specimens belonging to a previous dynamic stage. As a result, much of Martinique's plant formations are in little advanced stages. Today's secondary vegetation is subject to many pressures linked to demography and multiple human activities. The primary vegetation has been strongly modified in favour of intensive monocultures on which the plantation economy was based. This vegetation is the result of the various human activities which succeeded one another from the colonial period to the present day. The phytocenoses observable today in Martinique are called secondary and belong to different dynamic stages.
Each bioclimate corresponds to a vegetation floor composed of groups or populations of preponderant species. In Martinique, as in the other islands of the Lesser Antilles, the rainfall gradients defined the bioclimates. These specificities have resulted in a high ecosystemic and specific diversity. In tropical island systems, the mesological factors have led to great environmental diversification. The trends that emerge from this study should be analysed in-depth in more systematic studies. In fact from the dynamic shrub floors to the climacic forests, the intra-vegetation environments first select the pioneer general and post-pioneer (transitory) species and then the specialised species called late species which are pre-climacic and climacic antagonist species.
This phenomenon results in an increasingly specialised replacement of the species range. The plant potential in the Lesser Antilles is of the forest type, it seems that during the progressive floristic succession the intra-vegetation environments become increasingly out of phase with the macroclimate. By using climate measuring stations, three of which were located within the shrubland, pre-forest and young forest formations, two metres above the ground, we have demonstrated a tangible relationship between the plant biomass structure of these formations and their internal environments. In the light of our knowledge of the Antilles' plant ecosystems we were able to underline their influence on the main factors of the general climate.
